FIKA
Connecting people to possibility.
Together with Fika (previously known as Bridges to Prosperity), we’re connecting communities to the resources they need—one bridge at a time.

Our impact
Access can change lives.
A bridge is something most of us take for granted. But for nearly a billion people, rivers and ravines cut them off from critical resources. We’re proud to support Fika to build pedestrian bridges in rural communities.
Because when communities can cross safely, everything else becomes possible.

Follow the Journey
Every bridge has a story worth telling.
For generations, the Karundura River has stood between families and daily essentials. During the rainy season, it swells into a dangerous barrier—forcing people to choose between safety and education, healthcare, and opportunity.
In February 2025, a team from Alberici and Flintco traveled to Rwanda’s Nyamasheke District to build the Bizenga Trail Bridge—a 93-meter hybrid suspension bridge serving nearly 3,000 residents across four communities.

the team finally arrives.
Our 10 Flintco and Alberici teammates arrived in Rwanda after an adventurous 48+ hours of travel marked by flight delays, detours, and a wild ride through Uganda. After a well-earned meal in Kigali, we were ready to get to work.

Travel Day
With trucks packed high with gear and groceries, we set out toward the site—music on, excitement high. Stopping at local markets, stunning views of Lake Kivu, and seeing a bridge built in 2021 in use made the long journey worth it. It gave everyone a preview of the impact ahead. The day ended with some friendly competition and team bonding.

building with purpose.
The local team had already set up scaffolding and painted the tower—an impressive and efficient start. From stretching and dancing alongside our Rwandan teammates to cutting and bending rebar by hand, the day was full of energy and teamwork. By day’s end, the bridge tower was raised, and the team celebrated a strong, united start.

Pulling the cables.
This was the toughest day yet. Together with the local team, we pulled cables across the bridge and up the tower, securing them with precision. One side is complete. Tea and chapati breaks kept everyone fueled as we climbed the steep incline to anchor and winch the cables in place on the opposite side. Another crew continued cutting rebar and checked the cross-beam threads. We ended the day exhausted, but feeling accomplished.

Securing the structure.
We set the final cables within a tight 50mm tolerance while managing a physically demanding winch setup and assembled 38 of the 92 swings. A tea break with vegetable spring rolls and a hearty lunch of rabbit stew, brown rice, coconut spinach, and plantains, with pineapple and watermelon, offered a welcome reset during a grueling day.

Hitting a Huge Milestone!
The team fine-tuned cable heights to meet design requirements and successfully installed five swing units—a major milestone. With rebar and swing assembly in their final phases, the project stayed right on track.

Building with the Community.
Entering week two, we were inspired by the joy, humility, and strength of the community, Fika, and our Bizenga team. Our Fika construction lead, Godfrey, reminded us that we’re here to build a bridge with the community—not just for them. That message resonated as we immersed ourselves in their culture and stories. After some team building, rest, and relaxation, we’re excited for what this week brings.

Overcoming the Challenges.
The team made significant progress, completing 95% of swing placements and beginning decking installation. Even with supply constraints, creative problem-solving kept the work moving and the bridge taking shape. The local community is energized, looking forward to the safety and opportunities this new bridge will bring.

Closing in on completion.
Decking installation neared completion, scaffolding came down, and fencing began. Local partners played a big role—hand-breaking rocks for backfill and smoothing the bridge entry. With the deck torquing halfway done, the team’s momentum remained strong.

Finishing the details.
With decking, torquing, and pipe stabilization complete, we moved on to safety features. Handrails and restraint cables were installed, concrete curbs were poured, and fencing continued—bringing the project close to the finish line.

connecting with the school.
Every community interaction left a mark on the team. At the local school, we were greeted with songs, dances, and bright smiles—reminding us of the deeper meaning behind our work. Donating school supplies and sports equipment felt like a small act, yet it brought immense joy. As the bridge neared completion, the team and local crew shared a barbecue, celebrating the bonds and brighter future they had built together.

celebrating inauguration day!
At the inauguration, a Bizenga villager shared a story of lives lost trying to cross the river before the bridge existed. “This bridge ensures safety for the rest of our lives,” he said. A heartbreaking past has now been replaced with hope—and a safer future for the community.
a different kind of jobsite.
