Integrating Domestic Wave Technology into a World-Class Training Facility

Challenge

The FAA’s CAMI Wind and Waves facility features a one-million-gallon indoor pool capable of generating 10-foot ocean waves for aircraft evacuation training. Wave-generation systems are highly specialized, with only a few manufacturers worldwide capable of meeting performance requirements.

During the bid phase, Flintco worked with our trade partner to select a domestically manufactured wave system that met all technical criteria while offering advantages: lower cost, faster delivery, and compliance with the project’s “Built in America” mandate. The domestic equipment was larger and more powerful than the originally specified equipment, which utilized an oversea manufacturer, necessitating careful integration with the facility’s structural and mechanical systems. The revised wave system also had an increased footprint which required structural modifications, while the higher heat output demanded increased HVAC capacity and new exhaust systems to maintain controlled pool deck conditions.

Solution

Flintco collaborated closely with the design team, wave-equipment manufacturer, and mechanical trades to integrate the larger system, modifying structural layouts to accommodate the larger machinery and engineering enhanced exhaust and HVAC systems to manage heat loads and maintain environmental stability. Equipment procurement, delivery, and installation were carefully sequenced alongside precast superstructure and basement construction to avoid impacting the critical path.

Result

The CAMI Wind and Waves facility opened on schedule, with fully operational wave-generation equipment that met all FAA performance requirements. The domestic system delivered cost savings, eliminated international shipping delays, and supported federal sourcing mandates. Through collaborative planning and technical problem-solving, Flintco successfully integrated complex wave technology into a world-class, one-of-a-kind training environment.
