University of Memphis Celebrates Grand Opening of Edwards Research and Innovation Center

Memphis, TN – The University of Memphis’ (UofM) new Edwards Research and Innovation Center (ERIC) is positioned to expand opportunities for students, draw in high-quality faculty and enhance its global reputation. The ribbon-cutting ceremony, attended by university officials, faculty, students, government officials, and project team members including Flintco and A2H, signaled a new chapter in the university’s pursuit of excellence in STEM education and research. This 65,000-square-foot facility stands as a testament to UofM’s commitment to scientific exploration and technological advancement.

The three-story STEM research facility showcases a range of specialized laboratories designed to push the boundaries of scientific inquiry. The state-of-the-art center features an agricultural technology center, a fabrication workshop, biomaterials and biosafety level (BSL) facilities, a cutting-edge cybersecurity laboratory and an advanced data science center.

Designed by A2H, the center’s enhanced learning spaces include 7,100 square feet of classrooms and lecture halls, 21,645 square feet of research laboratories, 4,850 square feet of collaborative environments for tutoring, mentoring, and studying, and 5,420 square feet of faculty offices. This layout promotes interdisciplinary collaboration, housing key centers such as the Institute for Intelligent Systems and the Intermodal Freight Transportation Institute.

Scott Taylor, Vice President and Area Manager for Flintco, emphasized the project’s educational impact and future-oriented approach: “The Edwards Research and Innovation Center is more than just a building; it’s a catalyst for innovation and learning. Throughout the construction process, we’ve had the privilege of engaging with students and providing them with practical, real-world experiences that complement their classroom education. This facility will not only advance critical research but also inspire the next generation of STEM professionals. We’re proud to have played a role in creating a space that will shape the future of education and research at the University of Memphis.”

Flintco’s focus on building for the future extended beyond construction. By involving students in the process, they created a unique learning opportunity that bridges the gap between academic theory and real-world application. This approach aligns with the center’s mission to foster innovation and prepare students for the challenges of tomorrow.

The Automation and Environmental Science laboratories also received upgrades, ensuring a comprehensive update to the university’s research infrastructure. These improvements further demonstrate Flintco’s commitment to creating a facility that will remain at the forefront of scientific research for years to come.

With its state-of-the-art facilities and focus on interdisciplinary collaboration, ERIC is positioned to drive innovation, foster academic excellence and contribute significantly to the scientific community. This facility is a key component in the University’s Carnegie R1 Research status, helping it strengthen its national recognition.
