Spaceport America is the world’s first purpose-built commercial spaceport. The FAA-licensed launch complex situated on 18,000 acres is adjacent to the U.S. Army White Sands Missile Range in southern New Mexico. The 6,000 square mile rocket friendly environment has restricted airspace from ground to space, low population density, and both a vertical launch site and 12,000-foot runway. Virgin Galactic occupies the main terminal facility known as the Gateway to Space. Phase I and II of this project consisted of renovation and tenant improvements to the first and second floors on the eastern portion of the building. New additions included a high end fit out to create custom and immersive spaces for use by future astronauts, their friends and family, and the Virgin Galactic operations teams. The Gaia lounge on the first floor celebrates the beginning and end of the customer journey to space. It features communal relaxation and meeting spaces surrounding a central barista island, a full commercial kitchen, and an interactive video walkway. The 2nd floor houses the mission control center, offices, briefing room, and a management viewing area.
