University of Oklahoma Advances STEM Education with New $80M Life Sciences Lab

Oct 03 2025

Norman, OK, October 2, 2025Flintco, in collaboration with Miles Architecture and CannonDesign, has officially broken ground on the University of Oklahoma’s new Life Sciences Laboratory Building. This new teaching and research facility will transform the future of STEM education on the Norman campus.

The $80 million, 105,000-square-foot Life Sciences Lab will serve as a cornerstone for OU’s expanding science programs. With lab enrollment projected to reach 4,700 students by fall 2025 – a 41% increase since 2019 – the facility is designed to meet unprecedented demand for lower-level chemistry and biosciences labs.

The new building will feature 25 modern teaching laboratories, a 250-seat lecture hall, and an advanced biomedical research space. Approximately two-thirds of the facility will be devoted to teaching labs, with additional areas designed for cutting-edge research activities. The project will replace outdated laboratory spaces currently housed in George Lynn Cross Hall and the Physical Sciences Center, providing students and faculty with state-of-the-art facilities that meet the evolving demands of contemporary science education.

“Delivering a building of this scale and significance requires collaboration, innovation, and precision,” said Flintco Vice President and Area Manager Kirk Mammen. “We’re honored to apply that expertise to a facility that will shape OU’s future in STEM education, and we are committed to making the Life Sciences Laboratory Building a source of pride for the university and the entire state of Oklahoma.”

The project is expected to be completed in 2027, creating a world-class environment that integrates modern technology, flexible lab design, and collaborative research spaces to prepare students for future careers in rapidly evolving scientific fields.
