FedEx Generator Building in Memphis Earns LEED Certification
Oct 20 2026
The new FedEx MEMH Generator Building at the Memphis World Hub has earned LEED Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, achieving 47 points and exceeding the 40-point certification threshold. Flintco served as general contractor on the project, delivering critical backup power infrastructure while meeting sustainability goals for one of the busiest logistics operations in the country.
As a central hub in FedEx’s global network, the Memphis World Hub plays a critical role in moving packages and time-sensitive shipments around the world. The new 40 MW generator plant strengthens the reliability of those operations, providing essential backup power through 16 dual-fuel 2.5 MW generators and four additional backup units of equal capacity. The facility also includes the switchgear, transformers, and supporting systems needed to maintain operations during power disruptions.
Constructing the facility required extensive coordination with FedEx’s ongoing operations. Portions of the project extended into active operational areas, including the installation of more than a mile of underground duct bank through the FedEx campus. Flintco coordinated work around active drive lanes, parking areas, and existing utilities to keep fleet and sort operations running without interruption throughout construction.
The project’s LEED Certification reflects a coordinated effort to reduce environmental impact through responsible material sourcing and construction waste management. The team diverted more than 85% of construction and demolition waste from landfills through reuse, recycling, and salvage. Approximately 25% of materials met LEED responsible sourcing requirements, reflecting the team’s attention to material selection and environmental impact.
Achieving certification required close collaboration among Flintco, FedEx, the design team, trade partners, and suppliers. The team coordinated material sourcing, tracked LEED credits, and documented sustainable construction practices while maintaining the project schedule and budget.
“The best project outcomes come from understanding what matters most to our client and finding ways to deliver beyond the baseline,” said Kevin Lee, Flintco Project Director. “For FedEx, that meant providing dependable infrastructure for a critical operation while pursuing meaningful sustainability goals. This certification reflects the entire team’s commitment to both.”
The FedEx MEMH Generator Building adds to Flintco’s long-standing work in Memphis and experience delivering mission-critical facilities where reliability, coordination, and operational continuity are essential. The project also supports FedEx’s broader sustainability commitments, including its goal of achieving carbon-neutral operations globally by 2040.
