Challenge

Modernizing Concourse B at Memphis International Airport meant performing complex construction in a fully operational, high-security environment—where every delay creates a ripple effect on the client’s ongoing operations. Early site work revealed that existing underground utilities, including sanitary and sewer lines, were inaccurately documented, creating immediate risks to both the project schedule and airport operations. With strict TSA and FAA security protocols, limited access windows, and no room for shutdowns, Flintco faced the challenge of resolving hidden utility conflicts quickly while keeping the airport running smoothly.

Solution

Flintco mobilized a rapid-response coordination effort, collaborating with designers, utility consultants, and airport stakeholders to locate and redesign utility routes in real time. Crews shifted to an accelerated seven-day work schedule to procure materials and implement changes without delaying downstream construction. Work was carefully sequenced to maintain continuous airport operations while fully complying with safety and security requirements.

Result

Utility conflicts were resolved with zero unplanned service interruptions, keeping the project on schedule. Team meetings with all stakeholders enabled resequencing of planned phased work areas, allowing time to resolve critical bottlenecks that required further investigation, additional underground structures, and rerouting of new services to avoid existing utilities, including fuel lines, sanitary lines, and sewer lines. This phasing adjustment allowed for subsequent demolition and structural work to proceed as planned, ensuring on-time completion of critical schedule milestones and minimal disruption to the traveling public and passengers while Concourse B gained safer, more efficient infrastructure.
